Why a single session rarely undoes years of tension, what a realistic series looks like, and when to stop coming on a schedule.

The honest version is that it depends on whether you are fixing something or maintaining something, and those two answers are very far apart.
If you are fixing something, one session is a start rather than a conclusion. Many people feel a meaningful difference immediately, especially with acute tightness. But a pattern that took two years of sitting to build does not surrender in an hour, and a therapist can only go as deep as the tissue allows on a given day. What typically works is a series of four to six sessions spaced roughly one to two weeks apart. The spacing is the important part. Tissue needs time between appointments to settle into its new position, and coming back too soon just means being worked on before anything has consolidated. Coming back too late means the old pattern has reasserted itself and you start over.
The reason a series works better than a single long session is cumulative access. Your therapist gets further on the third visit than they did on the first, not because they are pushing harder but because the outer layers have already released and the deeper ones are now reachable. Clients frequently notice this as the sessions feeling less intense over time while accomplishing more.
Once the pattern is genuinely resolved, most people drop to maintenance, and the interval that suits the largest number of people is somewhere between three and six weeks. If you sit at a desk all week, closer to four. If you train hard or ski a full season, you may want more during the loaded months and less in the off months. Anyone who is on their feet or under physical load for a living tends to land nearer the shorter end.
Some people are entirely event-driven and that is completely legitimate. Ski weekend, tournament, long-haul flight, moving house, a brutal quarter at work. Book when the load happens, do not book when it does not. Nobody needs a standing appointment to justify getting a massage.
Here is the part most studios will not say out loud: you should be able to stop. If the same complaint has not shifted at all after four or five sessions, more sessions is probably not the answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a tenth. That is the point at which the question stops being "how often" and becomes "is this actually a muscular problem," which is a question for a doctor or a physical therapist rather than for us.
We do not run a membership, a package, or an auto-renewing plan, which means nothing about our pricing is designed to keep you on a schedule. Deep tissue is $85, $125, or $165 by length, whether you come every three weeks or once a year.
Whatever interval you settle on, what usually breaks it is the calendar rather than the budget. Our week has no closed day in it and the studio stays open until ten at night, which is why clients who could never make a weekday afternoon still keep a rhythm going for years. Book the next one before you walk out and the interval mostly takes care of itself.
Ask your therapist at the end of your session what they would suggest for your particular body, and take that number seriously. They have their hands on the information. They will give you a straight answer even when the straight answer is that you do not need to come back for a while.
